Spring Schedule 2008

 

Saturday, April 12.  10:00.  Vernal Pools Field Work.  Cathy Kristofferson and Emily Norton will co-lead this field work day as the vernal pools team checks out some potential vernal pools in the state forest.  Learn about this fragile ecosystem and participate in the process of vernal pool certification.  Some waders will be available, but bring your own if you have them.  Meet at Memorial Hall parking lot in Townsend center.  We will carpool to the vernal pool sites from there.  Call Emily Norton at 978-597-3553 or email at Emily@willardbrook.org  for more information.

 

Saturday, April 19.  10:00 – 11:30.  Morning Walk.  Go on a leisurely walk through town and state property.  View the Squannacook River, and visit Black Rock and The Point.  Meet at Squannacook Elementary School upper parking lot on route 13 just north of Townsend center.  Leader:  Rhonda Plamondon.  Call Rhonda at 978-877-8489 with questions.

 

Sunday, April 20.  10:00.  Hike in Townsend State Forest.  Leader Paul Sebring will follow the windy trails through some of the lesser known parts of Townsend State Forest.  Meet at the Dudley Road parking lot across from Atwood Acres. Saturday, April 26.  10:00-3:00.  Townsend’s Earth Day Celebration.  Take part in Earth Day at Townsend Common.  Visit the Friends of Willard Brook table.  This year’s theme will focus on energy conservation.  Rain date:  Sunday, April 27, 12-4.

 

Saturday, April 26.  11:00-12:00.  Fly Fishing Seminar for Teenagers.  with Eino Kauppi, Townsend resident and treasurer for Friends of Willard Brook, who has successfully taught fly fishing on the Squannacook River for more than 20 years.  Get an overview of the sport of fly fishing, including the aspects of casting, equipment, the fish’s environment, and the practice of good conservation.  Meet at Pearl Hill State Park parking lot on New Fitchburg Road in West Townsend.  For more information, call Eino at 978-597-0248.

Saturday, May 3.  9:00.  Neat Streets Clean-up.  Friends of Willard Brook has joined the Townsend Neat Streets Campaign by adopting the streets surrounding Pearl Hill State Park.  Join your neighbors at the entrance to Pearl Hill State Park for a morning litter pick-up.  Bring water, snack and gloves.  We’ll provide trash bags and orange vests.  Call Joellyn Nevins at 978-597-8151 to register.

Saturday, May 17. Park Serve Day on the Nashua River Rail Trail.  Help Friends of Willard Brook celebrate this statewide service day to state parks by attending the annual clean-up of the rail trail.  At 10:00, arrive at the Ayer end of the trail, the Sand Hill Road parking lot in Groton, Pepperell center, or the Nashua end of the trail. We’ll also try to complete the clean-up of an old dump site off River Street in Dunstable.  Register at any of those spots and receive your official litter bags and gloves.  Fill your bags with litter, and leave them along the trailside for noontime pick-up.  Call Emily Norton at 978-597-3553 with questions.

Saturday, June 14. 1:00-3:00 Kite-making and Letterboxing for Kids of All Ages at Pearl Hill State Park field. Make a simple kite from a trash bag, straws and string.  This kite flies in the gentlest breeze!  Carve a letter box stamp, and then search for the hidden boxes using special clues.  This is lots of fun for the whole family.  Small donation is requested to cover the cost of materials.  Call Emily Norton (978-597-3553) with questions.
